PA

In addition to their very affordable cost, polyamides or PAs have many other qualities that make them a first choice material in delicate and demanding industrial sectors. PAs are particularly appreciated for their mechanical strength, their high moisture absorption, and their good behavior to heat and cold.

What are the specific characteristics of APs?

Polyamides are one of the largest and oldest families of engineering polymers in terms of production volume. They are distinguished by the lengths of the links between the amide groups and their arrangements. PAs are known for their outstanding mechanical, chemical and thermal properties. They have excellent wear resistance and good stability against chemicals, including common hydrocarbons and solvents. However, PAs can lose their dimensional stability and mechanical properties in a humid or, conversely, too dry atmosphere. They are also sensitive to light, UV and weathering.

Known by the trade names Nylon® (Dupont) and Rilsan® (Arkema), many parts made of PA are used in many industries. They are mainly used to replace metal parts and to manufacture high-strength parts such as fibers and engineered parts. In the automotive industry, they are used to manufacture gears, fittings, etc. They are also very popular in the textile industry.
